Please keep in mind that my strong suit is NetBackup, but I know enough about BE to help you out.Īt 09:05 PM, you wrote: >Thanks I selected to remove the unused catalogs after 30 days. I will look at the commands and reports that BE 10.x has to offer and see what I can suggest. But then there is reporting on failures and ensuring that all servers are getting backed up and so on. Right now, tape management and catalog purging seems to be the main are to worry about. This all takes time, so make it easier one your self – tackle on are at a time. By having them sent to yourself, they are right there in your email for you to review.
The best thing to do is to decide what reports you want, have them generated to a drive on you server, then have them mailed to yourself. I STRONGLY recommend that you set up weekly and monthly “at a glance” reports so you can ensure the processes are working correctly. If they are set properly, things like tape management and retention are taking care of automatically and it does not require your intervention. This may take some time, especially if you inherited the system and you are trying to figure out WHY something was set the way it is.īackupExec, like all main backup programs, has a good set out automated management tools. One thing that is very necessary, although it can be frustrating, is to take the time to go over the system with a fine tooth comb and check and set ALL settings for management of the system. You need to take the time to review the settings for BackupExec and make sure this is the case. It is always best to configure the system to automatically remove the data so you don’t make a mistake and remove something that you actually need. If you only want the data on tape for two weeks, then deleting catalogs that are over 30 days old is fine.
BACKUP EXEC 16 CATALOG MANUAL
When you say that you overwrite tapes every two weeks, are you referring to a manual process, or does the system automatically make them available? You may need to stop the services before you are able to delete them.Īt 07:43 PM, you wrote: >I have a folder on my email server that I use backup exec on > “D:Program FilesVERITASBackup ExecNTCatalogs”, and it is > currently over 10gb large. These are created while the jobs are running, but should auto-purge.Īs is the case across the board, I would backup ALL of the files in the directory –. tmp files, as long as they are not part of a current job that is running. Remember too that the date you need to look at is the Modified date – not the Created date.
Keep your special backup handy in case you need to restore from those files. If you are willing to take the chance of not needing the files, you can delete them.Īnother option is to run a special backup of the catalog files, then delete the older files. img files, you will not have the data you need to perform a restore. Based on the file extensions that you mention, you are using Backupexec 10.x.
